About Us

Facilities

We are conveniently located to provide customer support within all areas of Connecticut. Our main and largest facility, with 54,000 sq. ft. is located on fourteen acres in Wallingford, and offers sales, service, parts and rentals. A brand new 12,000 sq. ft. building, located in the eastern Connecticut town of Plainfield, was designed specifically for the sale, rental and service of construction equipment in that area. A parts facility in Danbury provides the best customer service in western Connecticut.

Our History

1925 – Winfred Ira Clark (W.I.) (pictured left) started the company in New Haven, Connecticut selling Ingersoll-Rand while traveling the state via motorcycle. Over the next 50 years, W.I. and the company were instrumental in building the roads, bridges and railways that allow us to move around the state today. The equipment brands the company sold during that time included Ingersoll Rand, Blaw Knox, Bucyrus-Erie and Terex.

1975 – W.I.’s sons Gordon and Gary, (pictured left), designed, built, and moved into a new purpose-built 55,000 sqft facility in Wallingford, CT, which remains its headquarters today. At the same time, W.I. Clark took on the John Deere Construction Equipment line. At that time, Deere was the preeminent manufacturer of backhoes and small dozers but a relatively small manufacturer of large construction equipment. Since that time, John Deere has become one of the major manufacturers of all sizes of construction equipment in the world.

1995 – W.I. Clark acquired the John Deere Utility equipment franchise from Pakulis Equipment and G&H Equipment. With those acquisitions, the company expanded its customer support with additional facilities in Brookfield, CT and Franklin, CT.

2001 – W.I. Clark acquired the John Deere Utility account from Lomac LTD, finalizing full statewide coverage for the full John Deere construction product line.

2008 – Volvo purchased the road machinery division from Ingersoll Rand and assigned it to the Volvo dealers. W.I. Clark was very fortunate to sign on with the Wirtgen family of equipment including Wirtgen mills, Hamm rollers, Vogele pavers and Kleemann aggregate products soon after the Volvo change.

2009 – W.I. Clark moved from Franklin, CT into a new purpose-built 12,000 sqft facility in Plainfield, CT.

2012 – Leeboy and Rosco products were added to the list of quality equipment offered by W.I. Clark.

2016 – W.I. Clark leased a building in Danbury, CT, replacing the Brookfield location.

2017 – Indeco Breakers were added to the equipment offered.

2018 – Deere completed their acquisition of The Wirtgen Group, making Deere one of only two companies offering a complete line of construction, forestry, milling, paving, compaction, and aggregate equipment.

Present day – W.I. Clark employs over 90 people and is the only multi-location construction equipment dealer in the state. It is currently managed by the 3rd and 4th generations (grandsons and great grandson of Winfred I. Clark).
